Extensive papers documenting Schickele's career and his writings related to agriculture, land tenure and using economics as a means for agricultural planning. There are numerous writings by Schickele related to agricultural issues includes a series of radio talks given at Iowa State. Some of the articles are in German and may include a copy of his doctoral dissertation. The papers related to the California study on whether small family farms were economically viable were done while he was a visiting scholar at Berkeley. The FAO and ADC series consists of reports he wrote while attending conferences and visiting countries to assist in building agricultural programs, many of which were in the Far East and Africa. His work in Sri Lanka dealt with assisting the university and government building agricultural economics departments. The publication series consists of copies of his own publications, mostly dealing with land tenure and tenancy in Iowa. The correspondence is from the period 1960 to 1974. There is also reviews and correspondence related to his book, Agrarian revolution and economic progress in the developing world.

Schickele was born in Berlin, Germany in 1905. He studied agriculture at the University of Berlin where he received his Ph. D. in 1931. That year he came to Iowa State to do post-graduate work. He taught at Iowa State and George Washington University. From 1946 to 1954 he taught agricultural economics at North Dakota Agricultural College, now NDSU.
